lyrics

From the lower landing, I could understand them
His words turned into violence; she let out a fake laugh

I held my breath, and started to climb the staircase
Disguising all my footsteps in passing cars
I heard them talk, and what could I do but listen?
She stamped her foot, and he started to scream

“I can hear you sneakin' around now
Do you know what that does to me most every night?”
She said, “I can't sleep with your pounding footsteps
You're inconsiderate and it makes me sick.”

I heard them talk, and what could I do but listen?
I never knew they were talking to me

I wanna back away from this one
But my legs are frozen stiff
I wanna back away from this one
But my legs are frozen stiff

In this apartment, so old that the floorboards echo
I should have known they could hear me so well

They came running thinking they had caught me
Too bad for the couple though, I had the edge
And late that night I came back to my place
"Eviction notice." I thought, "That's fair."

But if they'd known about all the pictures I took
You'd think they'd learn to lock their front door
